Helicopter Rescue

Airgreen’s Rescue Operations

Regional Emergency Services

Airgreen’s commitment to helicopter rescue began in 1995, when it launched a continuous partnership with the Valle d’Aosta Region to provide emergency services, including HEMS (Helicopter Emergency Medical Services), HSR (High-Altitude Search and Rescue), and HAA (Helicopter Air Ambulance). Over time, these services were expanded to Piedmont, Liguria and Sardinia and made accessible across the territory thanks to Airgreen’s nine bases.

Today, helicopter rescue stands as one of Airgreen’s most advanced and developed sectors, reflecting over two decades of focused investment, innovation, and unwavering commitment to safety and responsiveness. These services are delivered continuously—seven days a week, 365 days a year—with full satisfaction from the Regions we serve.

Our air ambulance fleet includes AB/AW139 helicopters equipped with cutting-edge safety technology: a fully digital EFIS system for fault detection, FMS for performance and navigation management, TAWS for terrain awareness in mountainous and hilly areas, and TCAS, a system that alerts the crew when another aircraft is nearby.

What is Helicopter Rescue?

Helicopter rescue is a specialized medical service that uses dedicated helicopters to respond quickly to critical situations. Its primary purposes are:

  • Rapid medical intervention, especially in remote or hard-to-reach areas
  • Fast transport to the most suitable hospital, even it it’s far from the incident site

Compared to ground ambulances— especially on winding mountain roads—helicopter transport is not only faster but also gentler and safer for multiple-trauma patients. The smoother ride reduces physical stress, which can be crucial during critical care.

Airgreen provides both primary interventions (direct dispatch to the scene by the Operations Center) and secondary interventions (transferring critical patients between hospitals).

In addition to its well-established daytime helicopter rescue service, Airgreen has also carried out numerous nighttime missions, including organ transport and the transfer of specialized medical teams.
